Just like a lot of things in life, some situations just aren’t meant to be. That also applies for business too...
Not all business is good business.
We get it, we can all be tempted to take on certain clients or work because you simply just want the revenue.
But as you learn and grow as a business owner, you will start to determine what “good” business is.
Speaking from experience, as well as having lots of amazing clients we will cherish forever, we have had our fair share of learning curves… for want of a better term.
So, what is 'bad business'?
· A client who isn’t willing to spend the money to see the results that they expect.
· A client who is indecisive and doesn’t really know what they want to achieve by using your services.
· Taking on a client despite warning bells ringing. (Sometimes you should listen to your conscience and good judgement).
Okay, now for the hard bit… how do you say 'no' to a prospective client?
No one likes to turn away business or to feel like they're letting someone down, especially when a potential client is offering money for your services.
But, like we’ve said previously, not all business is good business and by taking on this new client or project, you could actually be causing yourself more stress than that bit of extra cash is worth.
Save yourself the worry and sleepless nights and say NO.
But how?
1. Thank the customer for their enquiry and for thinking of you.
2. Lead with empathy.
3. Be transparent about why you can’t fulfil their request.
4. Provide alternative options. Do you know any other businesses that can help them?
5. Follow up about any referrals, did they get the support they were looking for?
Sometimes in business it's actually better to say no, so you can make room for bigger and better things.
