How to get the MOST out of working with a VA

You may or may not have heard the quote by Dwight Eisenhower: “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because they want to do it.”

And that’s exactly what a Virtual Assistant does for your business.

We do tasks you need doing, because we enjoy it!

As a small business owner, it can be easy to feel like you need to do it all. But we all know, that isn’t possible. If you need to boost productivity and take control of your time management, hiring a VA is one of the best things you can do for your business.

A VA can be an AMAZING asset to your business, if used correctly. But, if you, as a business owner, do not delegate the correct tasks to your VA, then you may not see any impact.

So, we wanted to give you four tips on how you can master the art of delegation, so you can make the most of your VA.

Understand what you do best

To know which tasks to hand over to your VA, you first need to understand what tasks you do best. You should ask yourself two questions:

-        Does this task bring value to your business?

-        Does this task make an impact on revenue?

Those, as well as the tasks that you are passionate about are the tasks you should carry on doing yourself. Everything else can be delegated to your Virtual Assistant.

Delegate recurring tasks

Because the aim is to boost productivity, your goal should be to give your VA the recurring tasks that need completing every month. Why? Because this way you are minimising training and in turn means your VA will become more efficient at those tasks.

Of course, it is expected every now and again that ad-hoc tasks will crop up that your VA will help with! But, by focusing on the monthly/weekly tasks, you and your VA will become more efficient and productive.

Give clear instructions

No one likes going back and fourth over email having to ask for more detail or further instructions. It’s easier for everyone if clear instructions are provided from the very beginning.

Make sure that you first understand the task so you can explain it correctly.

-        Send any documents needed and logins that are required for the task

-        Give clear timeframes and goals to avoid any miscommunication

-        Use clear concise language with no jargon

-        Where possible, provide examples

Avoid micromanagement

We get it, you’re used to being in charge of everything, so handing over tasks that you’re used to doing yourself can be challenging.

The reality is, only YOU can do things the way YOU want them to be done. The main reason you hired a VA is to help with productivity and time management. If you can, try and avoid asking for lots of updates, making small changes that may not be required. Instead, focus your energy on tasks that progress your goals.
